Afghanistan: the "Pinerolo" takes over the "Aosta"

(To TAAC WEST HQ)
25/05/16

This morning at the airport of Herat, there was the ceremony of changing the leadership of the Train Advise Assist Command West (TAAC W), the multinational NATO Command and Italian-led interforces operating in the West region of Afghanistan as part of the mission Resolute Support (LOL). The "Aosta" brigade, after almost nine months of training, consulting and assistance at the top management of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF), was alternated by the "Pinerolo" brigade.

At the ceremony, the Italian ambassador in Kabul Roberto Cantone, the commander of the Interactive Operations Command (COI), General Marco Bertolini, the commander of RS General (USA) John W. “Mick” Nicholson, the governor of the province, Mr. Asif Rahimi, and the highest Afghan civil and military authorities of the province of Herat.

In his speech, General Bertolini thanked the soldiers lined up underlining the excellent results achieved, and wished General Gianpaolo Mirra and the “Pinerolo” brigade for the difficult and delicate task that awaits them.

The training activities currently carried out by TAAC W advisors in favor of ANDSF aim to make the local security forces autonomous in the management of the professional development of their personnel. This is achieved with the training of new instructors ("Train the Trainers"), who in turn train "specialists" in the most varied subjects (intelligence, contrasting improvised devices, use of mortars and artillery, airspace control, etc.), in addition to consultancy activities (advising) aimed at the organizational development and functionality of the forces, for the achievement of an adequate level of sustainability.
