The minesweeper Alghero of the Navy started the 5 March from La Spezia to rejoin the units of the Second Mine Countermeasure Group of NATO, deployed in the Mediterranean Sea.

In the next few days the ship will reach the waters off the Peloponnese, in Greece, to participate in the activities of the Standing Nato Mine Countemeasures Group 2  (SNMCMG2), the NATO integrated multinational maritime force that works to ensure the preservation of maritime communication routes and access to ports from the threat of naval mines.

In addition to the Navy ship, the SNMCMG2 naval group, employed by theAllied Maritime Command based in Northwood (UK), it is composed of the Turkish TCG minesweeper Akçay, from the Spanish ESPS minesweeper Segura and from HMS Enterprise, English multi-role ship on which the commander of the device, commander Justin Hains of the Royal Navy, is on board, together with the staff.

In the Gulf of Patras the naval units will take part in the exercise Ariadne, during which activities will be simulated Naval Mine Warfare, in an environment characterized by asymmetric and airborne threat in a context of international crisis.

Ship Alghero, specially designed for the location and deactivation / destruction of naval mines, is the third class minesweeping unit Gaeta delivered to the Navy in March 1993.

In the 2015 it has completed modernization works that have affected the sonar apparatus, the hyperbaric chamber and structural changes. The minesweeping unit is able to carry out localization, identification, neutralization of naval mines, war residuals and devices to guarantee the safety of navigation.

To carry out these operations the Unit is equipped with wire-guided underwater vehicles Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and avails itself of the Operational Group Operational Divers (GOS) of the Navy.
