In the aftermath of the visit by the European Commissioner for Neighborhood Policy and Negotiations for Enlargement, Johannes Hahn, the divisional general, Luciano Portolano, head of mission and commander of the UNIFIL forces, met the vice president of the European parliament in Beirut David Sassoli.

The precariousness of the regional balances and the need to reinforce the stabilization process in Lebanon were the themes at the center of the meeting. "Intense and continuous efforts are made to keep the southern Lebanon area calm and stable in a regional context strongly marked by unstoppable crises and to prevent, in particular, that the consequences of the neighboring Syrian conflict could jeopardize the consolidation of the peace process. undertaken in the wake of the UN Security Council's 1701 resolution, "said General Portolano after illustrating the activities conducted by the over eleven thousand Blue Helmets in South Lebanon, in close and fundamental cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces.

Finally, General Portolano recalled that "Southern Lebanon is experiencing a period of unprecedented stability, the result of UNIFIL's constant commitment and manifestation of the will of the International Community in seeking a definitive solution to the age-old critical problems afflicting the Land of the Cedars" .

At the end of the meeting, Vice President Sassoli, in renewing the attention of the European Parliament towards this delicate geographical area, thanked General Portolano for the work done by the men and women of UNIFIL with the hope that they can identify new forms of collaboration with the institutions of the European Union and we can soon arrive at a definitive pacification with Israel, a probable and essential precondition for the stability of the regional balances.
