New commander for the EU training mission in Somalia

03/02/15

Brigadier General Antonio Maggi has been appointed as the new commander of the EU training mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia). General Maggi, from Italy, took up his duties on 8 March 2015. He will replace Brigadier General Massimo Mingiardi, who has held this position since December 2013.

The EUTM Somalia mission, launched in the spring of the 2010, is part of the EU's global approach to a stable, democratic and prosperous Somalia and is part of the EU's strategic framework for the Horn of Africa.

So far, he has contributed to the formation of some Somali military 3600s, with a special focus on officers, specialists and trainers.

The mission provides political and strategic advice to the Somali Ministry of Defense and to the Chief of Defense forces on strengthening the security sector. It also provides advice on military training in order to establish the bases of a military training system controlled by the Somalis. Since January 2014 the base of the mission is in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The decision was taken by the Council's Political and Security Committee.
