Last Friday the Italian contingent of UNIFIL on a brigade basis Ariete completed and inaugurated a solar-powered public lighting project in the Lebanese village of Ramyah.

In particular, twenty street lamps powered by solar panels were installed to improve road traffic and the safety of the inhabitants.

The use of solar energy for public lighting, in a context such as that of southern Lebanon characterized by a scarcity of electricity, bears witness to the special attention of the blue helmets also for environmental issues and the use of renewable energy.

At the inauguration ceremony there were, among the authorities, Colonel Alessandro Sciarpa, representing the commander of the UNIFIL sector west, General Fabio Polli and the mayor of Ramyah, Ali Nemeh SALEH, who in his speech warmly thanked the Italian contingent for the commitment in favor of its citizens, remembering also the works made in the past, such as the asphalting of some road sections.

Assistance to the local population ?? one of the main tasks assigned to the UNIFIL contingent by United Nations Resolution 1701, together with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting the Lebanese armed forces, tasks for which the soldiers of the Ariete brigade have long prepared themselves at home and are carrying out here with professionalism, transparency and impartiality.
