The Lebanese Military Council visits the Italian contingent of UNIFIL

Continue to work closely with the Lebanese armed forces, continue strategic cooperation to prevent accidents and find peaceful solutions to the security and stability of South Lebanon. These are the themes at the center of the talks between the commander of the Italian UNIFIL contingent and the generals Georges Chreim and Samir El Hajj, two of the major exponents of the Lebanese Military Council, the highest decision-making body of the Lebanese armed forces.

In examining the issues related to security in the Italian-led western sector, the commander of Sector West reiterated "the need for a broadly shared commitment by carrying out joint operational activities and planning targeted training".

On the discussion table also the point on the Middle East question with particular reference to the Syrian node and the implications in the operating context in the South of Lebanon that, "despite being characterized by strong uncertainty" remains "stable" thanks to "the capacity of the Italian contingent of UNIFIL putting the different local realities into the system, without which the support would be all the more difficult to achieve ”.

Also present at the meeting were General Pierluigi Monteduro, the Italian Embassy Defense Officer in Beirut, the commanders of the 5 ^ and the 9 ^ brigade of the Lebanese armed forces, the commander of the sector south of the Litani river, officers of the respective headquarters and the commander of MIBIL, the Italian bilateral military mission for the implementation of training, assistance and consultancy programs for the Lebanese armed forces.

Support for the Lebanese armed forces, together with monitoring of the cessation of hostilities and support for the local population, is one of the tasks assigned to the Italian contingent of UNIFIL in compliance with the 1701 resolution of the 11 August 2006 of the UN Security Council.
