Even in this period characterized by the covid-19 emergency, which in the mission in Afghanistan is still in the expansion phase, the civil-military cooperation interventions in favor of local communities operated by the national contingent of the Train Advise Assist Command West ( TAAC-WEST), currently led by the 132nd “Ariete” armored brigade.
In recent days, the Italian military have completed an important activity in favor of the regional hospital of Herat, the main medical-health structure in the area, which in the past has already been the subject of some development and improvement projects carried out by the forces of the coalition. In particular, thanks to the Italian initiative, shielding materials for radiation protection were donated and implemented in the radiological room of the hospital, thus making it functional, and thus enhancing the ability to provide services to hospital users.
The activity, organized and conducted by the TAAC-WEST CIMIC (Civil-Military Cooperation) staff, is part of the numerous assistance projects promoted by the contingent in terms of support to Afghan institutions and civil society. Specifically, the project in favor of the Herat regional hospital is part of the activities in support of the structures that operate for the care and health of the civilian population.
The commander of the TAAC-WEST, Brigadier General Enrico Barduani, in delivering the commemorative plaque, which was affixed to the entrance to the hospital's radiological room during the inauguration, wanted to express his closeness and solidarity with the medical staff and health care who daily commits himself, with constancy and self-denial, for the good and health of others.
“With this concrete gesture of attention in favor of the Herat regional hospital - said the commander of TAAC-WEST - the Italian contingent wants to further demonstrate its support for the population of Afghanistan, committed to building a solid and prosperous future for their society ".
The director of the regional hospital of Herat, Mohammad Naser Habib, in recalling the numerous interventions made by the Italian contingent in recent years in favor of the structure, thanked sincerely for the work carried out, expressing gratitude for the support and assistance that the Forces Italian armies supply their country's institutions.
Supporting the population, with particular reference to the most vulnerable sections of society, is one of the activities alongside the main training, consultancy and assistance to the Afghan Security Forces, conducted by Italian advisors, to increase functionality and self-sustaining capacity.
The Italian contribution to the “Resolute Support” mission in Afghanistan, expressed with personnel and means of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Carabinieri, has so far enabled the western region of the country to achieve some of the highest standards of safety and development in the country.
