Today, in the waters in front of the port of Civitavecchia, the crew of the submarine Pietro Venuti under the command of the lieutenant captain Antonio Salvatore D'Amico, he received a visit from the Undersecretary of State for Defense, Hon. Domenico Rossi, accompanied by the Navy Chief of Staff, team admiral Valter Girardelli and by the commander of the submarines division admiral Dario Giacomin. The Air Force Chief of Staff, General sa Enzo Vecciarelli, and the lawyer Pier Fausto Recchia, CEO of Difesa Servizi SpA also took part in the visit.

The institutional visit allowed the guests to appreciate the very advanced capabilities of the new submarine, the first unit of the 2nd series of U212A type boats, delivered to the Navy on 06 July, the result of a cooperation agreement between Italy and Germany signed in April. 1996 by the will of the Ministries of Defense of the two Nations, which has already led to the construction of 4 boats for the Italian Navy and 6 for the German Navy.

The submarine Venuti, like the sister unit Romeo Romei close to delivery, is characterized by highly innovative technological solutions. Entirely made of non-magnetic material with the application of the most modern silencing techniques to reduce the acoustic signature, it is equipped with a modern SHF satellite communication system, a latest generation "optronic" periscope and a weapon system based on the new heavy torpedo Black Shark Advanced of national production (Leonardo company). The propulsion is of type AIP (Air Independent Propulsion), based on the technology of fuel cells in which the electric power is produced by the reaction of oxygen and hydrogen, ensuring an autonomy immersion from 3 to 4 times higher than that of conventional battery boats.

There are many tasks that Italian submarines carry out every day for the community, always in a hidden way and far from clamor, participating in all maritime security missions in the Mediterranean and beyond.

Particularly maneuverable and suitable to operate in shallow waters, with an extremely small crew of highly specialized men and women, the submarine has very low daily costs of employment at sea. It is therefore a unique tool in the entire defense landscape for the collection of information and data without being seen that it contributes in a decisive way to the safety of communication routes, the freedom of navigation, the contrast of the terrorist threat, piracy and illicit trafficking of all kinds, as well as effectively supporting special forces operations.

Il Venuti, launched the 9 October 2014 at the Fincantieri Factory of Muggiano (La Spezia), has a displacement on the surface of 1.500 tons, an overall length of 57 meters, a maximum diameter of 7 meters and can reach a speed higher than 18 nodes. The armament is composed of 6 tubes-torpedoes from 533 mm with a type launching system Push-out able to launch Heavy-duty autofiloguide type torpedoes Black Shark Advanced (BSA). The crew is 27 unit.
