Last Wednesday at the Muggiano (La Spezia) plant, Fincantieri delivered the submarine to the Italian Navy Venuti, first of the second series of U212A type boats, named after the torpedo leader Pietro Venuti, gold medal for military valor in memory, who heroically lost his life on the submarine Galvani in the waters of the Arabian Sea, on June 24, 1940.

The new submarine is the result of the consolidated bilateral Italian-German cooperation, provided for by a government agreement between the defense ministries of the two nations, signed on April 22, 1996, which in recent years has already led to the construction of four boats for the navy German and two for the Italian one, the Todaro and Scirè which for some time have been operating with great success, alongside the four boats of the class Sauro 3 ^ and 4 ^ series (PelosiPrini, LongobardoGazzana).

The Submarine Pietro Venuti as the twin unit Romeo Romei launched last year in Muggiano and in an advanced stage of setting up and testing, it is characterized by very modern technological solutions, entirely made of non-magnetic material and using the most modern silencing techniques to reduce the acoustic signature.

In particular, the two U212 submarines of the second series are equipped with a modern SHF satellite communication system, a latest generation "optronic" periscope and a weapon system based on the new heavy torpedo. Black Shark Advanced, of completely Italian construction, as well as being equipped with an AIP silent propulsion system (Air Independent Propulsion), based on fuel cell technology in which electricity is produced by the reaction of oxygen and hydrogen, guaranteeing an autonomy in immersion from 3 to 4 times higher than that of conventional battery-powered systems.

The divisional admiral, Mario Caruso, director of the Military Center for strategic studies and president of the testing and acceptance commission, and the engineer Angelo Fusco, deputy director of military ships and director of Italian ships of Fincantieri were present at the delivery ceremony. Military and civil authorities in the sector also participated, including admiral inspector Matteo Bisceglia, director of naval armaments and division admiral Dario Giacomin, commander of the Navy submarines.
