On board ship Carabiniere, committed to the European anti-piracy mission Atalanta since last October, a team of divers of the operates Diving Operations Group (GOS) of Comsubin (Command Underwater and Incursors). Divers are specialized in operations against EOD / IED (Explosive Ordinance Disposal and Improvised Explosive Devices) and train frequently in the search and neutralization of bombs. In these cases, the Italian frigate is both an operational scenario and a training ground.

"The presence of explosive devices is a latent threat that cannot be faced with improvisation - explains the team leader of the GOS nucleus embarked on the European flagship - our presence on board allows the safety of the frigate during the mission, constantly checking the ship, including through dives, during which we inspect the hull and the mooring dock.

Our equipment also allows us to remove the devices from a distance - continues the team leader - allowing us to move the suspicious object to a suitable point and make it shine safely ".

For these activities, divers use high-tech equipment, such as “bomb suite” anti-explosion suits, which require special procedures when approaching the danger zone. The dressing is one of the cornerstones of every activity and is followed by the teammates of the nucleus with extreme attention, to support the operator and enable him to operate according to safety standards.
