It was the year 1943 when, on July 29, the minelayer submarine Pietro Micca, during a reunion with another naval unit of the Navy, was identified by the British submarine HMS Trooper which, after having launched torpedoes at it, caused it to sink in front of the waters in front of Santa Maria di Leuca.

On the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the tragic event, the training ship Palinuro, with on board the normal marshals of the helmsmen category of Mariscuola Taranto and the young people of the National Sailors' Association of Italy (ANMI), the Italian Naval League (LNI) and the Sail Training Association-Italy (STA-I), took part in the ceremony of commemoration on 28 and 29 July.

On the evening of the first day, thanks to the coordination of the local ANMI groups, the Navy sailing ship carried out the ceremony of the lowering of the flag at the same time as the Monument to the fallen of the sea and the Monument of Punta Ristola. Subsequently, at dusk, thanks to the synchronous lighting of the tricolor lights on the schooner ship, the monumental waterfall and the Leuca lighthouse, an evocative moment was created to pay homage to the fallen overboard with an ideal embrace under the national colors.

The following day, the commander of Nave Palinuro, frigate captain Francesco Rima, together with his crew, embarked dr. Francesco Petracca, mayor of Castrignano del Capo, the auxiliary divisional admiral Filippo Casamassima, vice president of the National submarine component (CNS), dr. Giuseppe Alfarano, ANMI Southern Puglia National Councilor, the auxiliary vessel captain Fernando Piccinno, ANMI Southern Puglia regional delegate, a representative of the commander of the Gallipoli Port Authority and dr. Federico Cozzaglio, son of lieutenant Ezio Cozzaglio (former officer in 2nd of the Submarine Pietro Micca), to launch the laurel wreath into the sea.

At the end of the ceremony, the ship resumed its training activity under sail in the 58th education campaign on the Messina route, where it will make a stop in the first days of August.
