Ship Libeccio, engaged in the anti-piracy mission EUNAVFOR Atalanta, assisted the crew of the Panamanian freighter FOCOMAR in the Indian Ocean waters, last August 14.

The crew, composed of 24 people between Ukrainians, Russians, Filipinos and Greeks, due to a technical problem had to abandon the Ship and take refuge in the only fishing village on the island of Samhah, a small Yemenite island in the Indian Ocean not far from off the Horn of Africa.

Received the distress call, Libeccio ship was designated by the force commander of the mission for an assistance intervention.

The bad weather conditions, due to the persistence of the monsoon winds, forced the use of the embarked airborne structure (helicopter), which promptly saw the commitment of pilots and on-board specialists, who soon flew over the area for a reconnaissance to identify the crew members of the freighter, to then provide assistance by providing food and basic necessities.

The crew of the merchant ship then waited for a ship organized by the shipowner, arrived on the day of Ferragosto, on which before embarking he wanted to thank the Navy for its timely intervention.
