Monday 30 January 2017 the team patrol boat Aviere of the Navy, under the command of the frigate captain Alessandro Romano, left the port of Taranto to join the Naval Group NATO engaged in the Aegean Sea in the maritime operation Sea Guardian.

The Navy renews its commitment with NATO through the participation of Nave Aviere, already used in the “Sea Guardian” operation in the 5-20 November period 2016, also holding the command of the Naval Group.

The operation Sea Guardian was born after the Warsaw Summit in July 2016 with the aim of increasing coordination between the activities of NATO and those of the European Union conducted with the operation Eunavformed Sophia in the Mediterranean area, in order to improve European defense and collective security by ensuring greater synergies and exploiting the peculiarities of each organization.

Sea Guardian is a highly flexible operation that is able to guarantee a wide range of maritime maritime safety tasks that include the surveillance of the maritime areas of interest (Maritime Situational Awareness) and the fight against maritime terrorism while ensuring training for the security forces of coastal countries (Maritime Security Capacity-Building). In addition to these activities, the operation can exercise maritime interdiction, the protection of freedom of navigation, the protection of sensitive maritime infrastructures and the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
