Military Navy: the Euro frigate joins the Sea Guardian operation

Thursday 8 February, the frigate Euro of the Navy, left the Mar Grande Naval Station in Taranto to participate in the operation Sea Guardian of NATO.

In the next few days the ship will reach the port of Cartagena, in Spain, to rejoin the NATO naval group. Ship Euro after a phase of integration and training with the other allied ships, it will leave the Spanish port on Tuesday 13 February, to begin patrolling operations in the central Mediterranean until 4 March.

Born after the NATO summit in Warsaw in July 2016, the operation Sea Guardian is a highly flexible operation that is able to perform a wide range of tasks in the field of maritime security which include the surveillance of maritime spaces of interest (Maritime Situational Awareness) and the fight against maritime terrorism, while ensuring training in favor of of the security forces of the coastal countries (Maritime Security Capacity-Building). In addition to these activities, the naval forces assigned to the operation can carry out activities of maritime interdiction, protection of freedom of navigation, protection of sensitive maritime infrastructures and the fight against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The frigate Euro, under the command of the frigate captain Nicolò Pisani, has a crew of about 190 men and women, including a security team from the Marina San Marco Brigade and pilots and specialists in the Navy's air components.
