"Yesterday as today, the Navy has a decisive role in the growth and prosperity of a country like Italy". It was underlined during the historic conference for the commemoration of the Marines who fell for Venice during the First World War held on board the Nave San Marco, at anchor in the waters of the lagoon city.

"The role of the Navy, then the Royal Navy, in the First War - said the ship captain Giosuè Allegrini, director of the Navy Historical Office - was decisive: without his contribution, not only would the conflict over the 'Isonzo, on the Piave and the Alps but it would have been impossible to avoid the ruin not only of Italy itself, but also of England and France. To decide the fate of the clash the collapse due to the naval blockade in the Adriatic and in the Mediterranean that prevented the exit of the Austro-Hungarian fleet from the Otranto Channel ".

The important contribution of the Navy in the water but also on land, as we wanted to remember in the day dedicated to the Fanti del San Marco, "spearhead of the Armed Forces for the Defense of Venice", underlined the commander Allegrini, together with the another lecturer, the historian and former "infante" Alessandro Paglia. A conference was held in the hangar of the Amphibious Unit, which was attended, among others, by numerous students.

The commemoration day continued with the deposition of a crown, by the Commander of Maristudi Venice, rear-admiral Marcello Bernard, at the Military Memorial.
