On the morning of March 4 at the Monument of the Unknown Soldier on the seafront of Alexandria in Egypt, with a short but solemn ceremony, the tactical commander of the operation Safe Mediterranean, rear admiral Stefano Frumento, accompanied by the ship commander Bergamini, flagship of the operation, frigate captain Francesco Salvatorico Coronas, paid homage to those killed at sea in the Egyptian Navy. Together with a representation of the Egyptian Navy, led by the deputy chief of staff of the naval base of Alexandria in Egypt, Commodore Mohamed Ragab, a wreath of flowers was laid, a gesture of respect towards those who sacrificed their lives at sea.
The following day, Admiral Frumento and Commander Coronas, together with the military attaché in Egypt, captain Marco Testa, and a representative of the Nave crew Bergamini, paid homage to all the fallen at the Italian military memorial of El Alamein. Here, with a brief and evocative ceremony, full of emotion, another wreath of flowers was placed in honor of the Italian soldiers who fell in battle. The shrine, which houses the remains of thousands of soldiers, is a place of great historical and symbolic importance.
The visit to the shrine was followed, finally, by a visit to the Al-Alamein Military Museum. The museum houses a vast collection of artefacts and historical documents that tell the story of what happened in these same places in 1942. The visit offers the opportunity to reflect on the realities of war and the importance of peace, as the monument erected recalls at the entrance to the museum.
The two days represented an important opportunity to pay homage to all those who sacrificed their lives for their nation. The laying of wreaths and the visit to the places of memory instead highlighted the importance of remembrance and respect for the fallen.
