There is no stop for the divers of the Navy, the men of the SDAI nuclei (Sminamento Difesa Antimazzi Insidiosi) of Taranto and Augusta have concluded two important operations of removal and neutralization of explosive devices of the Second World War, which had been found respectively in the waters of the port of Bari and Marinella di Selinunte (Trapani).

In the days of 5, 6 and 7 July the blasters of the Diving Operations Group Comsubin intervened following the request of the local prefectures to eliminate the threat posed by a large number of perfectly preserved remnants of war, found a few meters deep.

In the port of Bari, the GOS operators stationed in Taranto have cleared 4 areas in which a company specialized in the research of these artifacts had identified 8 grenades of various caliber and two dangerous English aircraft bombs of 500 and 1.000 pounds, while at 80 meters away from the shore of Marinella di Selinute, the divers of the SDAI of Augusta have removed and destroyed 16 large-caliber bullets that were lying on a sandy bottom a few meters deep.

With the neutralization of these explosive devices, which took place through the application of strict operating procedures specifically designed to limit the environmental impact, those stretches of sea were once again open to the public and to navigation.

This operation, like many other activities conducted by the staff of the Diving Operations Group, is part of the capabilities that the Navy puts at the service of the community, of the protection of the sea and of the internal waters of the country, also guaranteeing, especially in tourist resorts, the right security framework that allows the population to live in complete serenity moments of vacation. It should be emphasized that throughout Italy in 2016 alone a total of 12.400 explosive devices were identified and destroyed, while already 6.423 explosive artifacts dating back to the last conflict that were removed and destroyed starting from 1 January 2017.

Comsubin divers recommend to anyone who comes across artifacts, with shapes similar to those of an explosive device or parts of it, not to touch or tamper with them in any way, reporting their discovery as soon as possible to the local Harbor Master's Office or to the most nearby carabinieri station.
