The divers of the Diving Operations Group (GOS) of the Navy in support of the safety device for the G7, concluded the operations of removal and neutralization of 31 war surplus weapons found during the activities of securing water and sites, through the use of structures C- IED - Counter Improvised Explosive Device - for the research and reclamation of explosive devices in a maritime and underwater environment.
On the morning of today all the bombs found, recognized as bullets of small and medium caliber of German manufacture, dating back to the Second World War, were destroyed by "blasting".
The operations carried out by the divers, carried out with the utmost caution, allowed us to recognize unexploded but still dangerous weapons, to remove them from the seabed and to tow them to a safety area identified by the local Maritime Authority, where the procedures for destruction.
On the occasion of the Summit, the naval air component of the GdF, responsible for the sea safety of the event within the 12 miles, has entrusted the coordination of the underwater activities to the GOS divers, who already in the past on the occasion of different civil protection exercises, they had been called to lead interforce and inter-agency underwater activities.
The activities in support of security for the G7 saw the divers of the Guardia di Finanza, the Carabinieri and the State Police cooperate together with the Navy divers, trained at the Diving and Raiders Command of the Navy (Comsubin).
This operation, like many other activities conducted by the staff of the Diving Operations Group, is part of the capabilities that the Navy puts at the service for the safety of the community and the protection of the sea.
The Comsubin divers in case of accidental discovery, recommend that anyone should run into artifacts, with shapes similar to those of an explosive device or parts of it, not to touch them or tamper with them in any way, denouncing, as soon as possible, the discovery at local Harbor office or the nearest carabinieri station.
