The divers of the SDAI Unit (Sminamento Difesa Antimezzi Insidiosi) of Ancona have concluded today the operations of removal and neutralization of an explosive remnant of a war hoisted on board by M / P Zamo during a normal fishing trip.

On the night of June 6, the Zamo found an artifact attributable to a probable explosive device between the nets. For safety reasons, the fishing boat was moored in the Ravenna outpost on a quay of the Porto Corsini Cruise Terminal, an area that was then banned by the Harbor Master's Office.

The Territorial Office of the Government of Ravenna has therefore requested the urgent intervention of the bomb specialists of the Diving Operations Group Comsubin who, on the morning of 7 June, reached the boat. The operations conducted by the Navy divers made it possible to recognize the device as a 500-pound American aircraft bomb from World War II and to transport it to a safety area identified by the local maritime authority, in order to make the device usable again. port of Ravenna and release the fishing boat.

Today the operating procedures for blasting the airplane bomb have been completed, which contemplate the measures to reduce the resulting environmental impact to the maximum, through the positioning of a counter-charge of circumstance applied by the divers during a delicate dive.

This operation, like many other activities conducted by the staff of the Diving Operations Group, is part of the capabilities that the Navy puts at the service of the community, of the protection of the sea and of the internal waters of the country, also guaranteeing, especially in tourist resorts, the right security framework that allows the population to live in complete serenity moments of vacation. It should be emphasized that in all of Italy in 2016 alone 12.400 bombs were identified and destroyed, while more than 2.500 were already removed starting from 1 January 2017, numbers that do not take into account the more than 4.000 bullets of caliber less than 40 mm that they were removed from our seas, lakes and rivers in these first six months of the year.

Comsubin divers recommend to anyone who bumps into artifacts, with shapes similar to those of an explosive device or parts of it, not to touch or tamper with them in any way, denouncing their discovery as soon as possible at the local Harbor Office or at the most near the carabinieri station.
