Yesterday, the Comsubin divers (Underwater and Raft Command) immersed themselves at 55 meters deep to inspect the wreck of the submarine Veniero, sunk 92 years ago with its crew at 5 miles from Capo Passero (Siracusa).

In order not to forget the sacrifice of these sailors and to remember at the same time, a few months after his death, Enzo Maiorca, the Underwater Operative Group conducted the dive from the ship Antaeus right on the birthday of Marina's gold medal for valor, together with her daughter, Patrizia Maiorca, and the staff of the Superintendence of the Sea of the Sicily Region.

The dive took place with the "saturation technique" on the vertical of the wreck, a particular and complex underwater activity that only the Navy is able to conduct throughout the Mediterranean and which represents the highest expression of underwater professionalism worldwide. .

The prefect of Syracuse, dr. Giuseppe Castaldo, accompanied by the commander of the Maritime Command of Sicily, witnessed the salient phases aboard the ship Antaeus and thus had the opportunity to observe the professionalism of the Comsubin divers in conducting the particular underwater activity which has a total duration of about 104 hours (4 days and 8 hours).

The saturation dive carried out at Capo Passero made it possible to check the wreck's conservation status and make a detailed mapping of the adjacent seabed.

The activity carried out by the Underwater Operative Group, a veritable excellence in the underwater field of our country also recognized abroad, is part of the multiple capabilities that the Navy places at the service of the community in the marine environment.
