The island of S. Elena, the last offshoot of Venice, hosts from the 1937 one of the Italian Military Schools of excellence and of the Navy: the Naval School "Francesco Morosini". A second-level educational institution where the last three years of the scientific and classical high school take place, whose goal is to train young people by arousing their interest in life on the sea. To access it, it is necessary to pass a national competition, the same that, published last 17 March in the Official Gazette 4 ^ Special Series, provides 2017 seats for the 2018-65 school year: 50 for the scientific high school (2 classes from 25) and 15 for the classical high school.

800 about the annual applications of young people from all over Italy, but mainly from Lazio, Campania, Puglia and Triveneto, want to enter the School. A careful and meticulous selection that over the years has been increasingly perfected. Teaching staff from the MIUR. Classical teachings, from Latin to Greek, but with an eye on important subjects such as mathematics or languages, including English and the recent introduction of Spanish. Lessons, but also sports - sailing, rowing, basketball, volleyball, swimming - and training, including meetings with other Italian Military Schools.

A life, that of those who enter Morosini, which has the flavor of a challenge: with themselves first of all, as stated by Captain Massimo Fabbri, commander of the Naval School: "I admire the boys who little more than fifteen years old decide to do such a path and I always hope that their choice is, however still adolescents, aware. It is a challenge not least because I realize that at the beginning they are put under pressure, but if there is a will, all obstacles are overcome. If you fall, get up and move on".

The commander of the Naval School is also a school manager, he is the one who interfaces with the civil school managers and when the boys win the competition he signs a pact of educational co-responsibility with the parents: “It's like I became a parent myself at 50% of all the kids. A delicate task, assumed for a year and a half and which thanks to a team that works in synergy has very positive returns from the parents and satisfactory results for the boys. A commitment not just considering that the transit from adolescence to maturity is very special. 'Patria e Onore' is the motto of all the training institutes of the Navy and what we try to do is educate them to grow, to respect the world of rules, but also to be put in a position to arrive at the end of the three-year course bringing forward what is their greatest attitude ”.

On the other hand, the Military School is only partially the antechamber of the Academy: every year an 40% of the course members decide to continue in the Defense sector, while another 60% has different experiences. During the second year of the course the one that Fabbri defines the "is organizedBlue Week": A full immersion in the Italian military structures, not only of the Navy, useful to guide the boys in the future choice. An important moment since the competitions for the Academies are made during the last year. And to those who think that not continuing their military career after the end of higher studies is a kind of failure for the School, the Commander himself replies: "We form good citizens rather than good soldiers. The three years spent at Morosini will leave an indelible mark on young people and will ensure that values and concepts such as a sense of belonging, selflessness, respect, a sense of duty, solidarity are their own regardless. The morosiniano it is all round and in any sector it operates, be it civil or military ”.

For those interested in getting to know the reality of the Naval School closely, an appointment from Friday 24 to Sunday 26 March with the Open Day.
