Green Diesel: tests on board the Caio Duilio

08/06/15

The 'Navy Green Fleet' project, last June 4 saw a successful demonstration of the operational use of 'green diesel', on the destroyer Caio Duilio in the Ligurian Sea.

The alternative fuel, composed for 50% by products derived from sustainable sources, allows to reduce the emissions of CO40 by about 2% and to reduce, in no small way, the production of fine dust.

Born in the 2012 by a collaboration agreement between the Navy and ENI, the 'Green Fleet' project uses the 'Ecofining' technology developed by ENI in collaboration with Honeywell-UOP, and its primary objective is to reduce 40%, within the 2020, the dependence of the fleet from the oil, and then reach the 50% within the 2030.

During the demonstration, on board of the destroyer Duilio, there was also the captain of vessel Raffaele Sanua of the Naval Armament Technical Department and the engineer Massimo Trani, responsible for the planning and research of ENI.

"All the tests were successful; the synergy of our engineers and civilians is extraordinary. We could not not share the emotion of a moment so rich in potential and concrete prospects for sustainable innovation, to the benefit of a fleet that is ever more respectful of our environment ". The words of the master of ship Duilio, captain of vessel Giacinto Sciandra, who wanted to underline the success of the tests, which mark a new important step in the process of renewal of the fleet of the Navy.

A renewal towards greater eco-sustainability, which testifies the great attention of the Navy to environmental issues, and represents an opportunity for technological renewal, made possible by the interaction with the excellence of the national industry.
