Eunavfor Med, Cavour returns to Taranto after 11 months of mission

The 27 may, after eleven months, ship Cavour, flagship of the military operation EUNAVFOR MED-Sophia, returned to Taranto.

283 days in the operating theater, of which 215 days at sea, almost 5.000 engine hours, 400 flight hours of the EH-101 helicopters embarked, these are the numbers that measure the commitment of the ship, the first flag ship of a European air-naval contrast device to human traffickers in the central Mediterranean, which began on June 26 last year.

Ship Cavour it hosted the mission's European staff, commanded by Rear Admiral Andrea Gueglio, made up of 60 officers and non-commissioned officers from 14 nations.

The hospital area of ​​the Ammiraglia ship has then allowed to ensure a high-quality medical facility, thanks to the presence of a medical team of type Role 2, who carried out an intense diagnostic, radiological and laboratory activity but, above all, life-saving surgery. The hospital on board, in fact, guaranteed continuous health assistance, medical evacuations, surgical interventions for both migrants recovered at sea during search and rescue events, and for sailors embarked on the units of the European device but also on fishing boats present in the area. .

During the long operational commitment, on board ship Cavour various activities with national and foreign political, media and military connotations took place, such as the visit on board of the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Police, the Spanish and Italian Joint Chief Operating Officer, the German Defense Chief of Staff and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission.

Ship Cavour leaves the area of ​​operations passing the baton to ship Garibaldi which - from the 1 ° June - is the new one flagship of the European mission.
