Exercise to increase the ability to explore the seabed

Catamaran 2014 is an interforce and multinational exercise run by the French navy. Its purpose is to increase the exploration capabilities of the seabed, for the safety of merchant and military ships, along the maritime communication lines.

It lasts for about two weeks and involves air, land, diver and naval assets, including the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, frigates, landing units and minesweepers.

The scenario presented simulated a crisis situation in which a group of terrorists, after having occupied some strategic locations, had carried out a threat to the waters in front of the ports, blocking their access. The task force's mission, composed of approximately 30 units, was to carry out search operations for underwater weapons, obviously consisting of inert simulacra, and to clean up the area, in order to make safe the passage of landing forces and the means designated for bring humanitarian aid to the populations of the occupied territories.

This year the mine countermeasures force employed was made up of French minesweepers, French and Slovenian EOD teams, and the Italian REMUS team.

This is the first Italian Navy team authorized to conduct the vehicle REMUS 100, a new endowment of the armed force, and consists of 3 military specialists in mines and mine countermeasures that employ the autonomous underwater vehicle in all those activities, even non-military ones, conducted by the Italian navy to provide support for search and remediation operations of weapons and remnants of war at sea, research and control of marine archaeological sites and monitoring and protection of marine fauna and flora.

In particular, during the exercise, the REMUS, in addition to composing a complete mapping of the seabed by locating the exercise “mines” has allowed to find 4 war surpluses of the 2 ^ world war. Men and vehicles, belonging to the command of the Mine Countermeasures Forces and Auxiliary Forces, were placed at the disposal of the international task force obtaining excellent results and confirming, once again, the excellent expertise in international interoperability.
