Search and rescue exercise on a damaged submarine

From the 8 and up to the 20 September, in the waters facing Marina di Ginosa (Taranto), one of the most important and complex exercises of search and rescue of a damaged submarine, called in code IT SMEREX 2014, takes place.

The objective of the exercise is to verify the correct execution of all the procedures to rescue the crew of a submarine, forced by a failure to remain on the bottom.

The exercise sees two submarines, the Scirè and the Pelosi, engaged in the role of damaged unit. In the role of rescuers, in addition to the Anteo ship, a submarine rescue and rescue unit, which has various cutting-edge systems with which it is equipped, including the mini-submarine SRV 300 - Submarine Rescue Vehicle, the contribution of the Underwater Command will be fundamental and Incursori (COMSUBIN) with the divers of the Underwater Operative Group, including those of the air-launched emergency unit called SPAG (Submarine Parachute Assistance Gruoup).

The SMEREX 2014 IT will also allow to verify the correct functioning of the "alarm chain" which involves the involvement in such cases of various elements of the armed force, each with its own well-defined role, from the COSPAS-SARSAT plant in Bari, which receives the distress signal emitted by the SEPIRB buoy, launched by the distressed submarine, to the submarine operations center and the CINCNAV COAN, the latter appointed to manage the emergency, through the operational control of the search and rescue facilities and assets.

After the tragedy of the Russian submarine Kursk occurred in the 2000, the attention of all countries towards this branch of maritime rescue has increased and the navy, which has always been a leader in the sector, will host numerous marine officers during the IT SMEREX 2014 exercise. coming from different nations of the world, all very interested in the skills and expertise of MM in such a peculiar field.
