Two divers from the Comsubin in Antarctica

Antarctica could be considered a frozen desert, its surface is almost totally devoid of vegetation, the fauna, already scarce, is confined only along the coasts. However, the underwater environment is very different, guarded by the ice pack, populated by abundant, lively and prolific animal and plant communities.

This biodiversity is based on one of the reasons for scientific research that ENEA (national agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) conducts in Antarctica on behalf of the National Program of Research in Antarctica (PNRA).

The XXX Italian expedition to Antarctica, which will begin in the next few days, will take place immediately after the conclusion of an important technical table, held in Comsubin and requested by ENEA, which established the implementation of the "Diving regulations" used in the navy for all the underwater activities necessary to carry out the PNRA in order to increase the safety of the scientific personnel by taking advantage of the experience and unquestionable professionalism of the divers of the Teseo Tesei Divers and Raiders Group.

As a result of this agreement and for the first time in the history of the Antarctic Program, a period of amalgamation and evaluation of the abilities of the divers and health assistants of the next Italian expedition was held recently at COMSUBIN. At this training time, the staff of the Diving Operative Group and of the Varignano health service taught the methods required by military regulations to conduct, in complete safety, technical dives in such an extreme environment and those to intervene in the event of disarmic accidents.

Downstream of this agreement, the navy has made available two Comsubin divers, lieutenant Antonio Corda and head of 1 class Giuseppe Tangari, who will take part in the XXX Italian expedition to Antarctica and who has been given the task of coordinating and leading with the scientific divers of ENEA all the diving activities that will take place in the surroundings of the Mario Zucchelli Station in Baia Terra Nova in the Terra Vittoria (74 ° 41'42 ”S, 164 ° 07'23''E).
