Press Release Co.Ce.R. marina: 882 days in India

17/07/14

This morning the Co.Ce.R. Marina, along with colleagues from the Interforze, participated in the hearing of the Defense Committee of the Chamber on the situation of riflemen detained in India.

On that occasion, he expressed his thanks to the Honorable Members for their sensitivity towards the subject and the Co.Ce.R. he deposited a copy of all the official actions and interventions that have been carried out in these two years, demonstrating the absolute closeness of the military world to Massimiliano and Salvatore unjustly detained in India for 882 days.

The Delegates welcomed the report by the President of the Defense Commission Hon. Elio Vito, during which he repeatedly stressed "the unanimity with which the Defense Commission is following the affair while in Parliament the political groups are divided over everything".

The Co.Ce.R. he recalled once again that Massimiliano La Torre and Salvatore Girone were in service on behalf of the State, in international waters and for this double reason their functional immunity must be recognized and defended; this did not happen and Italy has unfortunately given the whole world the image of a country that operates in an international field in an improvised way, unable to defend its rights also because it is bound by a logic that sees us losing to high economic-commercial interest.

A change of pace needs to be made in the interest of the Fusiliers and of Italy. a sign of the government's unwillingness to face the difficult situation with determination that the case requires.

The Marine Section of the Co.Ce.R. considers it essential that the forces of the country continue, united and determined, towards the solution of this international case: "bringing home Massimiliano and Salvatore with dignity and honor must be a priority for everyone".

For this reason, at the end of the hearing, the Delegates asked the Commissioners to continue in the actions announced by the President of the Defense Commission Elio Vito including:

a) To hear the Prime Minister and the Foreign and Defense Ministers by the Defense Committees of the Chamber and Senate, in the presence of the Co.Ce.R. Navy and Joint Forces, to be informed about the actions that the Government is carrying out and that it intends to carry out;

b) Involve the European Institutions, so that they support Italy with greater energy and conviction in resolving the case, aware that the problem of functional immunity of State personnel operating in international scenarios is a common problem;

c) Make a new visit to Massimiliano and Salvatore as soon as possible. The Co.Ce.R. Marina will continue her action by bringing the voice of Massimiliano and Salvatore to each meeting.
