Comsubin: the divers remove a bomb of 500 kilograms

17/06/14

The Core SDAI (Sminamento Difesa Antimezzi Insidiosi) of Ancona, of the Comsubin Diving Operative Group, intervened in Baia di Vallunga (Pesaro) following the notification, received by a recreational diver, of the presence at sea of a probable unexploded device .

With the first dive of the SDAI operators, the object reported was identified as an Italian 500 Kg double-armed bomb and dating back to the Second World War. The bomb removal operations, already intrinsically delicate and risky, were further complicated by the limited amount of water of 1,7 meters that prevented the use of normal lifting systems from the bottom. The operators were forced to set up a shipping system consisting of a floating structure, equipped with an apparatus for mechanical lifting, which made it possible to detach the object from the bottom.

The dangerousness of the device, probably triggered, and the particular procedures adopted for its removal made it necessary to evacuate part of the municipality of Vallugola.

After the removal phase the offshore bomb was towed where, about 2 miles from the coast, the Comsubin men applied a counter-charge and made it shine by adopting the classic measures for the protection of the fauna navy.

It is important to point out the commendable sense of civic duty of all those who, encountering an object attributable to an explosive device, immediately contact the competent authorities (harbor master and carabinieri) to request the intervention of the Operative Group for the protection of all.
