Yesterday, 24 July 2017 at the monument to the fallen of the sea the commemoration ceremony for the fallen of "Operation Malta 2" and the sinking of the Royal submarine took place within the Terravecchia di Marisicilia area Ascianghi.

The ceremony, in the presence of the Sicily maritime commander Rear Admiral Nicola de Felice, saw the participation of military and civil authorities of the province of Syracuse, family members and Mrs. Rossella Fiorini, daughter of the then commander of the submarine Ascianghi second lieutenant of vessel Mario Florins.

The Augustan historian and promoter of the ceremony, lawyer Francesco Migneco, wanted to underline that "this commemoration is the legacy of the memory of the sailors who fell during the Malta enterprise of 24 July 1941, but also the historic action of the Ascianghi submarine of 23 July 1943 who lie at the bottom of the sea covered with glory and audacity. Men willing also to the extreme sacrifice who, with daring and heroic action, have honored the homeland by ensuring their actions to history; the same upright ideals that still today constitute the essence of our actions".

In this circumstance, the commander of Marisicilia wanted to remember that: "understanding these heroes means operating in the direction indicated by them, so that their work is the source of a principle to inspire our daily life, our existence especially of us soldiers and young people in particular. Nothing can penetrate so durably and intimately into a youthful soul as the tragic fate of exemplary men.".
