Underwater reclamation of the Comsubin Underwater Operating Group

06/06/14

The divers of Comsubin, located at the SDAI (Sminamento Difesa Antimezzi Insidiosi) nucleus, continue their uninterrupted work aimed at draining the waters of our coasts from explosive remnants of war, unfortunately still present in large quantities.

These operations are conducted as a result of one of the school tasks that the nation has assigned to the navy divers.

In particular the underwater activities carried out in the last month by the men of the Underwater Operative Group of the "Teseo Tesei" divers and raiders group have allowed 419 to be destroyed, divided into 249 medium and large caliber bullets, 1 underwater mine, 2 mortar bombs , 4 aircraft bombs and 163 rifle bombs.

This work has involved the underwater departments of the marina in activities to safeguard public safety in the port of Piombino, near the Gallinara and Giannutri Islands, in the waters in front of the provinces of Syracuse, Gela, Cosenza, Olbia, Taranto and Pozzuoli. But the most delicate intervention was conducted in Reggio Calabria by the staff of the Pronto Department of the GOS that has plunged, to over 50 meters of depth, inside the wreck of the "Laura C" to remove the explosive material it contains .

For lovers of the sea, which with the advent of the beautiful season begin their recreational diving activity, we recommend not to touch the artifacts, eventually found, whose shape may or may not remember an explosive device or parts of it.

What we should do instead, for everyone's safety, is to identify the site where the object was found and, if you have an underwater camera with you, take a picture to be able to immediately report the finding to the local harbor master's office o carabinieri station, which will require the intervention of the Comsubin Diving Operative Group which will provide for its removal and blasting.
