Last ammaina flag for the Minerva and Sibilla corvettes

14/05/15

This morning at the Tullio Marcon Quay in Augusta (Syracuse), headquarters of the Command of the Patrol Forces for Coastal Surveillance and Defense, the flag of the Corvettes Minerva and Sibilla was lowered for the last time, after more than 25 years of activity , for the subsequent disarmament of the two ships.

The combat flag of both naval units was handed over to the Chief of Staff of the Navy, team admiral Giuseppe De Giorgi, to then be kept in Rome inside the Altare della Patria in the Shrine Museum of the Armed Forces flags.

"The Navy will have to shave 51 of its 60 ships for which Ammaina flag ceremonies will be frequent." These are the words of Admiral De Giorgi, who continues: "The very important important aspect is that this reduction obviously did not go unnoticed and therefore also related to the importance of the sea and to the interests and safety of the nation itself the government has decided to implement the fleet renewal program ".

These two units will only be replaced in the 2021 and 2022 when the first two new patrol boats, financed by the 2015 stability law, will enter the line and when the fleet is already reduced by around 45% with respect to the current size.

"They will be ships - said Admiral De Giorgi - able to participate effectively in the defense. With a single investment we build a ship that will be part of a wider system of protection and defense in depth of the maritime lines and of the obliged passageways on the high seas, but also able to operate in coastal waters for rescue operations »

With the cancellation from the roles of the military ships of the two Corvettes Minerva and Sibilla, the process of downsizing of the Navy fleet continues and in the next decade 51 will radiate well of the 60 current ships in service.

The two corvettes laid up by the Italian Navy will be sold to Fincantieri for subsequent sale to Bangladesh.
