The scientific training course on the "History of Oceanography", during which thirty students from various Italian universities had the opportunity to attend practical and theoretical lessons, proposed by qualified speakers, ended today with the delivery of the certificates of participation. aboard the training ship Amerigo Vespucci, moored at the Military Arsenal of La Spezia.

The course, which began on Tuesday 11 October, was born with the aim of making known the oceanographic and underwater technologies and methodologies of the past in order to understand their historical evolution and future developments and is the result of the collaboration agreement between the Navy and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) signed in July 2015.

During the course, among the various activities, a visit to the Naval Experimental Support Center (CSSN) of La Spezia was planned, where the visitors, within the underwater acoustic laboratories, were able to learn the methods of sound propagation in water, the procedures for acquiring acoustic data and the equipment used for measuring noise in the marine environment.

The visit to the Naval Technical Museum aroused particular enthusiasm and interest, in direct contact with the objects of the tradition of the Navy, including naval models, geographical maps, photographs and documents that trace the events of naval history and the Navy.

The course ended with an exit to the frigate at sea Bersagliere, during which the students practiced one of the most traditional and meaningful navigation techniques: astronomical navigation with the use of the sextant.

With this course the commitment of the Navy continues with personnel, means and professionalism at the service of the community in addition to the usual institutional tasks for the Defense and Security of national interests.
