It took place at submersible flotilla command the “Next Generation Submarine" (NGS) workshop dedicated to the research of innovative technologies that have the potential to bring about a paradigm shift in the design and construction of submarines. The NGS project, born from the Navy's vision of “Future Combat Naval System 2035", aims to seek a real technological leap for submarines which, with a target of 2050, will support and replace both the in-line U212A units and the U212 submarines Near Future Submarine currently under construction.

The workshop represented a moment of discussion which, with the supervision of Directorate of Naval Armaments of the General Secretariat of Defence, allowed Fincantieri, executor of the undertaking, to present the results of the first phase of the project dedicated to scouting the most promising innovative technologies.

The event saw the participation of submarine engineer officers of the Navy, involved in the design of submarines, of representatives of Fincantieri, in particular of the submarine projects office, and of a wide representation of national academic institutions of excellence (ISME, POLIMilano, POLITorino, UNIGenova, POLIBari, UNIFirenze, UNICassino, UniSalento, UniCalabria, UniPisa, UNIMarche, UNIBologna, UNIRoma, UNITrieste, UNINapoli, UNIPalermo, CNR, UNIPadova) distributed throughout the national territory.

The broad participation has allowed us to look with optimism at the subsequent phases of the project, which will therefore be able to start from an enabling network for fruitful synergies indispensable to allow our country to continue to belong to the small group of maritime nations capable of designing, building and finally employ submarines in full autonomy.
