23/10/14

Ship Andrea Doria flag unit of the European Union anti-piracy mission Atalanta, the 16 October 2014 in the waters of the Gulf of Aden, conducted a series of exercises with the Japanese ship Takanami, part of the 151 task force, also involved in the fight against maritime piracy.

Both units have pretended to be suspect merchants and investigation and boarding procedures have been initiated by the respective teams. Doria ship boarding was carried out by a team of 12 Japanese operators.

The team of operators of the San Marco marine brigade instead entered aboard the Takanami with the EH-101 helicopter from the Doria ship, using the fast-rope.

Once the security frame was secured, the simulation continued with the arrival of the inspection team, to check the documents and the various environments of the suspected merchant ship.

The exercise was an opportunity to put to good use the meeting between two naval units involved in ensuring freedom of navigation in a strategic area for Italian, Japanese and European interests, and to deepen mutual knowledge and exchange experiences in the field of combating maritime piracy.
