24/09/14

Ship Doria, under the command of vessel captain Gianfranco Annunziata, who left the port of Salalah last September 12, returned to the Gulf of Aden to continue, as flagship of the Atalanta operation, its activity in the fight against piracy and cooperation activities with the numerous marinas that insist on the area of operation.

Just arrived in the IRTC (International Recommended Transit Corridor), the unit immediately carried out an activity of RAS (Replenishment At Sea) with the German ship Berlin, belonging to the same Task Force. In the same afternoon, she was called to carry out one of the activities that are part of the daily tasks assigned to the Atalanta mission, a Friendly Approach, on a typical Yemeni boat dedicated to fishing.

The purpose of the friendly approaches is not only to understand the activities of this kind of boats, to exclude possible piracy actions, but also to make known the work done by the ships included in the Atalanta operation, which operate in support of both merchant traffic than the local one.

Continuing its patrol activity for the control of mercantile and local traffic in the area, the unit conducted training activities with the French ship Courbet, on its way to Djibouti, while on the day of 15 September it was held, still on board a ship Doria, a planning meeting, with a delegation of Japanese officers from Nave Takanami, in order to plan an exercise at sea, scheduled for next October, which will see the two ships as protagonists.

The cooperation activity continued with an interaction with the Korean unit Munmu The Great, which also saw the September 18 exchange of personnel between the two units. The Korean Linx is taken on a Doria ship with the commander and a delegation of officers on board; at the same time, a representative of the Doria ship crew and the CTF 465 staff visited the Korean unit.

The visit of Korean colleagues was followed by another friendly approach, this time on two boats bound for Somalia to carry out fishing activities, in a continuous alternation between anti-piracy and cooperation activities, to try to increase ties between the Marines working in the area and pursue the common goal of protecting merchant traffic in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean.
