The 26 October ship Andrea Doria has successfully performed off the missile launch of a ASTER 30 to protect a US naval unit designated for ballistic defense.

The missile launch reaches the peak of the intense activity that has seen from the 4 to the 26 October, ship Andrea Doria participate in the exercises Joint Warriors 15-2 e At Sea Demonstration 2015 (ASD 15), both conducted in the demanding waters of the North Atlantic, off the Hebrides in Scotland.

28 naval units, 4 submarines, ground troops, helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft of 12 NATO countries were included in the activity. task force. The theme of the exercise, oriented to surveillance and maritime safety, was developed on the basis of a multinational crisis scenario with a growing duration of 10 days, necessary to train the crews of the air-naval structures to operate successfully in the three forms of struggle (aerial , surface and underwater).

The next and important ASD 15 was planned and conducted by the Maritime Theater Missile Defense Forum (MTMD Forum), which includes the marinas of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Spain and the United States; they from 1999 cooperate and research initiatives of common interest in order to increase the level of interoperability within the Maritime Integrated Air and Missile Defense. For the occasion, the marinas participating in the Forum have set up a naval device of ten units at the Hebrides polygon, with the aim of verifying on the field the level of integration and maturity achieved in the fight against ballistic missile threats, directed against the friend territory, and type Anti Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM), times, instead, to neutralize the Naval Force.

During the ASD 15, ship Doria, thanks to the advanced capabilities of its own systems Command and Control, has exchanged ballistic traces with the units of the MTMD Forum naval device and with the main NATO and US Centers involved in the Ballistic Missile Defense. During the exercise, for the first time in a non-US polygon, a US unit carried out a missile launch with an SM-3 against a ballistic threat.

The participation of Doria ship in these important activities and the missile launch are therefore a significant milestone, both from an operational and technological-industrial point of view, an indication of the high level reached in this sector by the Navy.
