Technical innovations on board of Palinuro ship

18/05/15

Last Friday on board the Palinuro training ship, at the naval base of La Spezia, tests were carried out on the use of the new system for positioning and parking on the trees introduced in order to increase safety in activities at height.

This innovation, the result of a partnership with the best expertise in the sector, consists of a system consisting of a structural component (vertical and horizontal safety lines) and new PPE (individual protection devices) and which, while maintaining the requirement for operator of always being hooked, frees him from other gestures that would divert him from full awareness of the situation around, thus mitigating the risk of accidental fall.

The long research and preparation work could be concretely carried out thanks to the virtuous synergy between the unit crew (in particular the Marine Service), the Arsenal Directorate (in particular the Sailing Ships Program Office), the workers. and the private industry that has worked, without saving on human resources and energy, in the installation of this new and so far unique innovation.

The verification involved the structure and the new PPE and made it possible to evaluate both the ordinary procedure of ascent to shore and exit on the yards, as well as the emergency procedure, in the case of a person at height who must be evacuated.

The excellent outcome of the tests not only adds an important piece to the security measures already in place, but allows the crew, already immediately, and the students of the Naval Academy, from the next education campaign, to operate and train respecting and maintaining the most deeply rooted seafaring traditions.
