Yesterday, 25 September, the navy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MIBACT), recovered a series of coins from the "treasure" of the wreck of the Pollux steamer in the waters of the Elba island.

The operation (video) was conducted by ship Anteo and the divers operating group (GOS) of the command divers and raiders (COMSUBIN) "Teseo Tesei", at a depth of over 100 meters.

The steamship Polluce, known for its legendary treasure, sank the 17 Jun 1841, rammed by the Mongibello steamer.

The discovery was possible thanks to the use of the new ROV (Remoted Operative Vehicle) PEGASO, supplied to Comsubin, a sophisticated robotic system equipped with powerful manipulator arms, high-definition cameras and latest-generation sonar, which can reach 2.000 meters of depth.

The recovered coins - Spanish silver columns from real 8 - are of great historical and numismatic interest and are added to the more than one hundred coins brought to light by Anteo and its divers in previous 2007 and 2008 missions.
