The 2014 Green Global Banking Award assigned to the Navy

24/10/14

The navy was awarded the Green Global Banking Award, during a study day dedicated to the theme of the good functioning of the green economy, for the extraordinary commitment in the care and custody of our Mediterranean Sea, through the "Green Fleet" project and with the contribution to the European Union Marine Strategy.

"Green Fleet" is an initiative of the navy for the country system. It is a project aimed at demonstrating that dependence on oil can be halved by 2020 and therefore the climate and environment objectives of EU policy can be achieved and exceeded. 50% of the oil requirement would be displaced and replaced by biofuels and liquefied natural gas.

Focusing on advanced technology sustainable biofuels and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), to reduce dependence on oil, means favoring Italy and protecting the Mare Nostrum. It is estimated that every year, the Mediterranean Sea is crossed by 380 million tons of imported oil with the risk of serious environmental damage due to accidental or deliberate spillage. One million tonnes of hydrocarbons are spilled as a side effect of sea freight and loading and unloading operations at oil terminals. Discovering and suppressing environmental crimes on the high seas is a task of the Navy which also has six offshore patrol boats equipped to face and contain the effects of the spillage of heavy oils transported by tankers.

High quality biofuels, such as Green Diesel which extends the operating life of engines and reduces maintenance, are produced with advanced technologies in the ENI biorefinery in Porto Marghera, also from waste biomass such as used fried oils and vegetable raw materials. residuals.

LNG, on the other hand, can be imported from ships built in Italian shipyards and distributed in refueling points built in all national ports by Italian companies. LNG, then, is placed in a very young market niche yet with guaranteed supply chain profitability because the European Directive on alternative fuels will require all strategic ports to equip themselves by 2020 with infrastructure for refueling gas ships.
