After parking, the Garibaldi crosses the turnabout of Taranto

17/10/14

In Taranto on Wednesday, Giuseppe Garibaldi passed through the Ponte Girevole towards the Mar Grande after a modernization and maintenance stop at the Taranto arsenal. The stop, which will allow to prolong the operational use of the unit for at least other 7 / 8 years, was complex and the work involved almost all of the ship's facilities and structures.

The stop began the 14 2013 October and should have continued until 15 2015 March, with a total planned initial expenditure of about 11 million. The work will be completed instead the November 10 with the conclusion of the testing activities, with more than four months in advance of the planned and with an actual expenditure perfectly in line with the allocated financial resources.

The most important processes involved the propulsion system (the gas turbines that have come to an end at the end of their service life have been replaced), the electric generation system (revising the diesel generators and the distribution system of the electricity network), the bridge of flight (reconstruction of the bridge mantle with a high performance treatment and whose application requires specific technical skills and advanced equipment) and all the facilities to support flight operations, the air conditioning system both summer and winter, the systems of lifting and handling of aircraft and equipment, hull accessories, equipment and armaments of the combat system.

Among the activities performed also the modernization of equipment and systems for an ever greater respect and attention to the environment and nature. Particular mention deserve:

- replacing oily bilge water treatment plants, in order to adapt the unit to the latest national and international regulations in defense and protection of the environmental heritage - the remaking of the hull painting treatment with a cycle of high-tech paints, able to ensure a longer life (10 years instead of the "canonical" 3-5), to reduce the fuel consumption of the 8-13% and, consequently, reduce the emissions of pollutants.

The volume of work was high: a total of 5200 m2 of hull, 4400 m2 of flight deck, 30120 kg sheets, XEMUMX m29348 treated and treated tanks and bilges 3 m pipes replaced.

During the maintenance period the crew remained on board and, even in difficult situations, kept the ship alive and efficient and contributed significantly to the control and execution of the work.

The advance on the completion date is due to the high degree of specialization and to the organizational and production capacities of the companies of the naval-mechanical armaments industry (with particular reference to platform activities); the intervention skills of the arsenal workers; the ability to plan, rationalize and manage the resources of the military personnel of the plant, with an exceptional synergy at all levels between the board and staff of the companies and the arsenal.
