The divers of the GOS neutralize an airplane bomb

14/05/15

The bomb, classified as an Italian 2 World War II bomb by a total weight of 500 kilos, had been reported to the maritime authorities by a civilian diver who had immersed himself in that area last April.

Activated by the Pesaro-Urbino prefecture, the COMSUBIN divers took part in the 11 in May to conduct the underwater activities preparatory to the recognition of the explosive device.

Using a mini ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) equipped with television cameras, the position was identified and, through a dive carried out with the breathing apparatus used for approaching the explosive devices, the recognition was carried out which, in technical jargon, is called EOR (Explosive Ordnance Recognition).

The next day, having verified that the aircraft bomb could be removed, the men of the GOS proceeded to sling it and move it from the site of recovery through a lifting system for shallow waters made by the men of the Ancona SDAI nucleus.

The operation was conducted, from the remote towage of the bomb until it reached the blasting point identified by the Harbor Master's Office, according to the criteria of the lowest possible environmental impact.

At the 10: 00 of the 12 in May the lines of maritime communication and the safety of the citizens of the Vallugola bay were re-established thanks to the last dive of the COMSUBIN Diver, the most dangerous, during which a counter-charge was applied to the body of the bomb, thus allowing its destruction.

It is important to point out the commendable civic sense of all those who, encountering an object that can be traced back to an explosive device, immediately contact the competent authorities (Port Authority and Carabinieri) to request the intervention of the GOS.
