A runway that simulates the deck of an aircraft carrier was inaugurated in Grottaglie (TA), at the Aircraft Station of the Italian Navy, a Expeditionary Field; the runway will be used for the training of short take-off and vertical landing aircraft pilots (Short Take Off - Vertical Landing, STOVL) AV8B Plus "Harrier".
The 'simulator', which was born as the result of a collaboration between Navy Aviation and the Marine Corps, is a faithful replica, complete with signage and lighting, of the flight deck of aircraft carriers and for this reason, it is of great help for readiness of flight crews.
The structure is the first installed in Europe, and the fourth in the world.
