A significant date for the Navy is that of 9 September, which commemorates the sacrifice of 1673 men from the crews of the battleship Roma and destroyers From Noli e Vivaldi, sunk following the German attacks following the armistice between Italy and the Allies, signed on 8 September 1943. Those men were the first victims of the Navy in the War of Liberation, which began on the night between 8 and September 9.

A date that, due to its high value, in 2012 was elected as a symbol of the sacrifice of all the sailors, military and civilians, who fell for the homeland and to whom the "Day of Remembrance of the Sailors who disappeared at sea" is dedicated.

An anniversary, this, which is celebrated, since its establishment in 2002, at the Monument to the "Sailor of Italy" in Brindisi, built between 1932 and 1933 in memory of the sailors who fell during the First World War, a monument from iconic rudder shape, placed in perfect dialogue with the castle, symbol of the defense of the homeland on the sea front by the heroic sailors.
