Minister Pinotti represented the Italian government at the official opening of the expansion of the Suez Canal. The historic Egyptian artificial canal, which allows direct navigation from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, has been enriched by 72 kilometers.

In the presence of dozens of heads of state and government, the event was sanctioned by the signing by the Egyptian president of the document for the inauguration of the new section, and greeted by the crossing of two ships.

Minister Pinotti congratulated the Egyptian authorities on the completion of the doubling of the Suez Canal. Pinotti had already traveled to Egypt in November last year. During the institutional visit he had met with President Abdel al-Fattah Al-Sisi and the Egyptian Minister of Defense, General Sedky Sobhi, with whom he had spoken about the situation in the region, with particular reference to Sinai and Libya and the risks associated with the international terrorism and illegal immigration.

On the sidelines of the event, Minister Pinotti met his English counterpart, Michael Fallon. During the bilateral meeting, the two ministers focused on the immigration emergency and cooperation in the defense sector.
