Yesterday at Soveria Mannelli, in Calabria, the second edition of the University of Summer on Intelligence ended yesterday. The meeting that took place in the Michele Caligiuri Library was attended by the State Undersecretary of Defense Angelo Tofalo, the mayor Leonardo Sirianni, the director of the Department of Languages and Sciences of Education at the University of Calabria Roberto Guarasci and the director of the Mario Caligiuri Summer University.
In his closing work, Tofalo took stock of the current state of the Intelligence, on possible future directions, paying particular attention to technological development, the Internet, the web, artificial intelligence, blockchain and cyber.
"With great caution it is good to face the discussion about a future separation between internal and external expertise for the National Intelligence Services, because the territorial boundaries are increasingly blurred and those Cyber even non-existent", Said Tofalo who then addressed the need to train special business professionals in both crisis communication - and in this regard he recalled what happened in the tragic story of the collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa - and to provide all students with the tools adequate to defend against disinformation, especially in Italy "where there is a media system that must be able to interpret", Developing the scientific method and logical thinking.
"As an Undersecretary of State for Defense I could not fail to address defense and security issues that are strategically intertwined with the Information System", Said Tofalo who concluded by underlining"the importance of spreading the culture of security, of the need to teach the logical and scientific method, typical of Intelligence, right from schools and above all like HUMINT - the intelligence activity consisting in the collection of information by means of interpersonal contacts - you still remain the 'queen' of intelligence activities."
The undersecretary then called for the strengthening of the European defense industry and the increasingly decisive importance of the human factor in intelligence.
The event, promoted by the Master in Intelligence of the University of Calabria with the collaboration of Rubbettino, sees every year the participation of students from all over Italy with whom Tofalo has had the opportunity to interact by exchanging ideas and opinions.
The lessons in the previous days were held by the President of the Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic Lorenzo Guerini and by the representative of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alessandro Ferrara. The rector of the University of Calabria Gino Crisci, the secretary of the American Studies Center Paolo Messa and the commander of the Legion of the Carabinieri of Calabria Vincenzo Paticchio also took part.
Last year, in the first edition, as a group leader at COPASIR, Tofalo introduced the works dealing with the 124 Law n.2007 which regulates the "Information System for the Security of the Republic".
