Sunday 9 September, from 11.00, the Navy will celebrate the "Day of Remembrance of the Sailors Disappeared at Sea" in Brindisi in perennial memory of the sacrifice of the sailors, military and civilians, who died and were buried at sea.

The commemoration, which has reached the 75 anniversary and is considered a solemn civil ceremony, will take place at the National Monument to the "Italian Navy", built in 1933 by the Italian Navy League on the occasion of the award of the Cross of war to the Apulian city . Brindisi was in fact chosen for the important role of naval base of the Lower Adriatic of the Royal Navy during the First World Conflict.

The choice of the date of the 9 September has a precise historical and affective meaning for the Navy. A symbolic day linked to the sinking of the Battleship Rome, of the destroyers Vivaldi e From Noli and to the over 1700 sailors who died in those tragic war events.

The ceremony will be chaired by the Undersecretary for Infrastructures and Transport, on. Edoardo Rixi, and the Navy Chief of Staff, team admiral Valter Girardelli, who will pay tribute to all the sailors, soldiers and civilians, who died in times of war or peace, who sacrificed their lives to safeguard the collective interest at the service of the Fatherland.

In addition, the naval commander-in-chief, the Navy's logistic commander and the captain-general of the Corps of Harbor Officers - Coast Guard will participate in the ceremony.

On the occasion of the celebration for the 75 anniversary, the Navy will open to the public the Castello Svevo di Brindisi from 8 to 10 September, where a special exhibition on the Great War will be witnessed to the Armed Forces commitment to keep alive the historical heritage , values ​​and identities as an element of collective cohesion.

The 10 September from 11: 15, in addition, at the Sala Federico of the Swabian Castle will be held the cultural event "Historical re-enactment of the role of Brindisi during the First World War" in which the Undersecretary on Defense will participate. Raffaele Volpi accompanied by the Navy Chief of Staff, with interventions by speakers of academic level.

The Castello di Brindisi will be open to the public, with access from Porta Vittoria - via Dei Mille nr.4, in the following ways:

  • Days 8 and 9 September: from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 16:00 to 20:00;
  • Day 10 September: from 09:00 to 12:00 with the possibility of attending the "Historical re-enactment of the role of Brindisi during the First World War".
