Transparency Day: Palazzo Marina opens to the public

(To Marina Militare)
19/11/15

On Friday, November 20, the Navy will open the doors of Palazzo Marina to citizens, to celebrate the "day of transparency", with the aim of bringing citizens closer to the organizational and working reality of the Defense administration.

Palazzo Marina, symbol of the Navy, is one of the most significant constructions of the architect Giulio Magni (Velletri 1859 - Rome 1930), nephew of Valadier; begun in 1912 and inaugurated in 1928, the Palazzo della Marina is an imposing building inspired by the neo-baroque.

The complex covers 31.000 square meters, of which 11.500 are covered. The entrance propylaeus, which overlooks the Tiber, is enriched by the anchors of two Austrian battleships: the Viribus Unitis, sunk during the First World War, and the Tegetthoff, war prey delivered to Italy in 1919 and dismantled in 1925 in La Spice. The desire to insert metaphorical elements linked to the sea predominates in the design and construction of the environments, as if the entire building were to be the decorated stage of the life of the Navy.

The visit represents a dip in history, through a guided tour the public can visit the third floor of Palazzo Marina, accessing through the monumental staircase of honor to visit the Marble Hall, cross the historic corridors overlooking the internal courtyard and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the Library, with over 40 thousand precious volumes, many of which are rare manuscripts. Paintings, photos and ancient seafaring tools will be the guiding thread of the journey between history and art, tradition, architecture and seafaring iconography in an ideal navigation that touches the history of Italy.

The entrance will take place from the main entrance located in Lungotevere delle Navi 17, from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:30.
