"From compass to gyro", shows on the objects that led man over the sea

Compasses and gyrocompasses, circumnavigation and pilot books, radio navigation and satellite navigation. But also tide tables, great navigators and wars between maritime republics. The stories of the sea are on stage in Amalfi from 28 May 2017 as part of the exhibition "FROM THE COMPASS TO THE GYRO. The charm of navigation through the objects that have guided man over the centuries over the centuries", achieved thanks to a synergy between the Navy, the Municipality of Amalfi and the Association Metamorphosis.

Under the cross vaults of the Ancient Arsenal of Amalfi, the viewer makes a fascinating journey through the objects symbol of navigation.

The Italian Navy has made valuable pieces of great historical and artistic value available to the exhibition project.

From the collection of the Naval History Museum of Venice: a Chinese compass on a wooden plate, a 1694th century reduction compass, an octant and an astronomical telescope made in England from the XNUMXth century, a Venetian protractor from XNUMX, an English cylindrical ruler from the XNUMXth century , an XNUMXth century cylindrical sundial, an XNUMXth century Dutch sundial compass, a XNUMXth century Arabic celestial planisphere, a XNUMXth century Venetian sidereal clock, an XNUMXth century metal compass, an XNUMXth century Genoese compass and a quadruple hourglass of the fifteenth century.

From the collection of the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy: the Salmoiraghi roller sextant, the reflection circle, the compass for boats with binnacle, the parallel roller, the brackets, the compass with fixed points, the gyroscopic compass, the steering compass model 1965, the Pino spheroscope, the DESO 20 depth sounder, the stationgraph, the comparison watch, the BP Ulysse Nardin chronometer, the graphometer for compass turns, the aneroid barometer, the GPS, the ruler, the lens with cassette , the ruler, the nautical charts, the publications and the scale model of the hydro-oceanographic unit Admiral Magnaghi.

From the collection of the Navy General Staff: the scale model of the Bucintoro (State Galley of the Doges of Venice), the valuable volume "I Portolani" complete with nautical geocaps and the fixed optic candlestick.
