UNIFIL: visit by the Army Chief of Staff

Army Corps General Danilo Errico, Army Chief of Staff, today concluded his two-day official visit to Lebanon.

Upon arrival at Beirut international airport, General Errico was greeted by Massimo Marotti, the Italian ambassador in Lebanon, who accompanied him on scheduled institutional meetings, including one with the commander of the Lebanese armed forces general Jean Kahwaji.

The Army Chief of Staff then moved to the UNIFIL headquarters where he was received by Division General Luciano Portolano who, in his capacity as head of mission and commander of UN forces in southern Lebanon, explained the features of the mission within the framework of the delicate balance of the Middle Eastern chessboard.

On the sidelines of the interview, General Errico met with the staff of the Task Force Italair, a structure present in Lebanon from the 1979 and representing the longest-serving Italian unit within the UNIFIL mission.

On his second day of visit, the Army Chief of Staff went to Shama to meet the Italian contingent operating in the western sector of UNIFIL, led by brigade Taurinense and under the command of Brigadier General Franco Federici, in addition to the large representation of staff officers (interforces) operating in the UNIFIL headquarters (Naqoura). Greeting the Italian soldiers, General Errico expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the results achieved so far, saying he was sure he could rely on the professionalism of the Italian blue helmets committed daily in the full implementation of the UN Security Council 1701 Resolution.

Previously, the Army Chief of Staff was able to visit the training center of the Italian Bilateral Military Mission in Lebanon (MIBIL), responsible for the coordination and development of numerous training activities in favor of  Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) in the broader context of the initiatives of theInternational Support Group for Lebanon (ISG).
