UNIFIL: meeting with P5 ambassadors and mission contributing countries

Yesterday, division general Luciano Portolano, head of mission e force commander of UNIFIL, has convened and presided, in Beirut, a new meeting with the ambassadors of the permanent member countries of the Security Council, of the European Union and of the contributing countries of peacekeepers to the UN mission in South Lebanon. Participants also included the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL).

The event, which is part of the initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation for the full implementation and implementation of the 1701 Resolution, gave participants the opportunity to receive an update on the national political situation, the operational activities conducted by the blue helmets in coordination with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) and the state of progress of the Strategic Dialogue, a mechanism aimed at making the LAF autonomous in the control of southern Lebanon through a program of aid, projects and donations.

"In such a constantly evolving regional context, and despite the precarious internal political situation, due to the presidential vacuum, the area of ​​responsibility of UNIFIL continues to remain stable" said General Portolano, recalling how this goal is "the result of joint effort of all the actors in the field, including the Lebanese armed and security forces, political and religious authorities and the local population ”.

“Maintaining the results achieved so far - continued the general - requires the daily commitment, in synergy, of UNIFIL and all its partners. Only in this perspective will it be possible to successfully face the multiplicity and complexity of current and future challenges ".

At the conclusion of the meeting, General Portolano expressed his gratitude to the diplomatic authorities intervened for the constant support to the Mission which testifies to the international community's attention to this delicate geographical area.
